Often, we refer to this mid-summer holiday as the Fourth of July, but its real name, Independence Day, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
(I wrote about this document in an early post because it defines the purpose of government. I propose that we are unhappy with government because (most of) our legislators and executives have forgotten what that purpose is.)
As we go about our holiday weekend, let’s recall why we have a free day in July for grilling, parades and fireworks. I found a good article on remembering the reason for this day.
Early Independence Days were celebrated with a reading of the Declaration. I hope you will read it, too.
